Cándido González Morales, flawless revolutionary

On December 8th, 1956, the expeditionary of the yacht Granma Cándido González Morales was assassinated near the Toro River, East. Because of his qualities, his comrades made him the leader of the fight against the Batista dictatorship in Camagüey.

It is Puerto Padre, in the current province of Las Tunas, his birthplace on January 6th, 1929, but by family decision he moves to Camagüey city, near Santa Ana square, where the child culminates primary education. Later, he entered the Professional School of Commerce and did not delay in joining the fight against the reigning tyranny of Fulgencio Batista.

He is chosen by his companions as secretary of the Alumni Association and then president. Because of his selfless attitude, he became an outstanding student leader who joined the Orthodox Youth. He participated together with his comrades in the popular rejection of the March 10th, 1952 coup, where his desire for freedom increased even more. Cándido was one of the founders in Camagüey of the July 26th Movement.

Main actions

He then accompanies Fidel Castro on the historic journey from Tuxpan, Mexico, to Las Coloradas, on the landing of the Granma Yacht. Just three days later he marches to Alegría de Pio where the first encounter with the enemy takes place, and the dispersion of the rebel army.

He is part of the largest group of men that manages to meet after the withdrawal, and is one of the combatants who are handed over to the enemy. Managing to initially escape from the hands of the assassins, where he is found and brutally murdered. Currently, as a way of honoring his personality, several educational centers in our city bear his name.
