Augusto Arango y Agüero was born in Puerto Príncipe on March 18th, 1830, he conspired against the colonial power from a young age and took up arms in 1851 with his relative Joaquín de Agüero.

He participated in the attack on Las Tunas and in the San Carlos action, he was wounded by the Spaniards who also gave him the coup de grâce; however he managed to save himself and was helped by his brother Napoleon.

After two months of convalescence he went to the United States and returned after the Spanish government dictated an amnesty for all those who participated in the events of 1851. He continued in the conspiracy activities integrating the Revolutionary Junta of Camagüey and later the Logia Tínima. When the uprising of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes took place in La Damajagua, Augusto Arango marched to the battlefield with a group of men.
