Floirán Quirós Iglesias was born in our city on April 18th, 1931, he was an outstanding revolutionary fighter who fought against Batista’s tyranny.
He is the son of Gilberto and Isabel, farmers who came to Camagüey city with the aim of improving their way of life. As his family went through a difficult economic situation, he was forced to abandon his studies when he was in fifth grade. Floirán begins to work as an apprentice in a carpentry workshop, where he becomes a varnisher, a job that he manages to do with refined art.
Revolutionary activities in which he excels
One of the revolutionary activities in which he participates is a sabotage to obstruct the electrical lighting in the first neighborhood of Camagüey city, also in the preparations for the Strike of April 9th, meeting with a group of young revolutionaries in his own house. As the strike was not carried out, it was decided that the group should disperse and thus carry out various actions.
On April 13th, 1958, the group of men, including Floirán Quirós, fired on an urban bus, shooting at its tires with the aim of hindering its progress; It is then that they do not notice that a patrol is coming behind the bus and they decide to withdraw, that is when the young revolutionary decides to cover the withdrawal of his companions, and he alone, with his revolver, fights with the henchmen, who made a boastful display, machine gunning the place where Froilán was.
The revolutionary quickly fell down, he was the object of a monstrous cruelty, because according to the forensic report to his relatives; he had eighty-two bullet holes in his body. With only 26 years of age he falls mortally murdered.
Nowadays, the bravery and heroism of the young revolutionary is remembered, with an act being held every year in the same place where he was assassinated.
