The archaeological site of Pueblo Viejo, in Nuevitas, was declared a National Monument. This category is awarded for enrolling in the list of heritage assets that give prestige to our nation.

The ceremony was attended by governmental political authorities of the coastal city and the participation of the director of the Office of the Historian of Camagüey city, José Rodríguez Barreras.

Through what is stated in Law No. 2 of National and Local Monuments, it is decided to grant this condition to the area, not only because of its characteristics as a benchmark of our identity; but also for becoming a privileged space for scientific studies of the complex sociocultural processes in Cuba.

A significant moment in the ceremony was the presentation by the artist Nelson Miranda of the proposal for the monument that is planned to marks the spot.
