The cultural heritage of a city constitutes a socio-economic resource of vital importance for the development of countries.
That is why the Office of the Historian of the city of Camagüey, the entity that manages the conservation and management of the historic center of the city, designed a project based on the creative industries model, which is financed by the European Union and the execution of the institution itself; as well as the non-governmental organizations OIKOS and CARE France.
The general objective of this project is to contribute to the revitalization of Camagüey cultural life as a promoter of local socio-economic development, with the enhancement of its heritage.
Its objective
It also seeks awareness and the building of capacities of the different participants that interact in the territory as a central axis for an inclusive management that generates cultural and creative projects favorable to the development of the historic center, specifically in five public spaces: Carmen, Trabajadores and San Juan de Dios Squares, and Martí and Ignacio Agramonte Parks.
The project lasts four years and began to be implemented in its first stage since the end of 2019.
The current epidemiological situation in the world has left no choice but to seek alternatives for the continuity of the project implementation process.
Online workshop
An example of this is the online workshop given by Jordi Tresserras Juan, director of the Laboratory of Heritage, Creativity and Cultural Tourism at the University of Barcelona and vice-president of the International Council on Monuments and Sites in Spain; in which successful experiences of creative industries in different parts of the world were shared and one of this places was Camagüey.
This initiative has proven, internationally, to be a viable management practice in urban heritage areas and reclaims the role of culture as a means of regeneration of the city and a dynamic agent of its socio-economic development from the local level.
