For some years, the Historian’s Office of Camagüey city proposes every summer tours of various places of the city’s geography, to disseminate its values in a fun way and involve Camagüey’s families.

In the current edition, both the pedestrian routes and those designed by bus exceeded capacities, but the one with the greatest number of followers was the one called “From green to cobblestone”.

What does it consist of?

To get closer to the details, we talked with one of the specialists from the Cultural Management Center, Yamina Martínez Rabassa, who, with the satisfaction of having pleased the visitors, told us about some curiosities within the popular tour.

The first path was dedicated to children residing in homes without family protection. It was very attractive, since they started from the Agramonte Park, with a specialized explanation referring to the buildings that surround the founding site of the town, its architectural characteristics and the significance of the figure of El Mayor for the children of this land.

Then, in the double-decker bus, they went to Workers’ Square, to see its magical surroundings, where the Ignacio Agramonte Birthplace, La Merced church and the building of the Santa Cecilia Convention Center stand out.

On board again, they were able to appreciate from a privileged height, the buildings that are located from the square to the Casino, with a stop at Café La Comarca -to exchange with local writers, artists and clowns.

The proximity to the landscapes of the urban park, while receiving stories and poems dedicated to the city, was the perfect contrast for many who wanted to repeat the tour.

Other Options

Tuesday and Thursday were the days established for the tour; but on Thursdays priority was given to communities in transformation, children from special centers and projects from the Carlos J. Finlay Birthplace.

On Thursday 24th the summer program closed and the last route From the green to the cobblestones was filled with the group of retired nurses and the patients of the mental health support project. Everyone ended up moved and grateful for the beautiful experience, which, in addition to giving them a privileged view of their Camagüey, offered them a different day.

Remarks

Yamina is new to the collective. We began our dialogue with a bit of shyness, but she grew emotional as she recounted the different experiences that each tour left her and her star audience: children and grandparents.

When talking I could feel her joy at being part of a team that every summer walks on cobblestones under the intense sun; to offer an attractive summer proposal in which enjoyment and learning come together, while communicating the values of that living heritage that is undoubtedly the City of Waterpots.
