The Fidelio Ponce de León art gallery, which is based in the headquarters of the Office of the Historian of Camagüey city, combines its exhibition work with a sociocultural project that seeks to promote the artistic heritage of our city.

This project, named Carmen, is part of the Cultural Heritage Management of the Historic Center of the city, and has a marked interest in the visual arts.

The activities on its calendar are focused on the community, but especially on the children of the Carmen neighborhood, most of them students from the Marta Abreu primary school, which is close to the gallery.

The visual arts specialist Dairel Arcos Corso tells that the project includes activities related to the legends and traditions of Camagüey, drawing and engraving training, artistic appreciation classes, film debates and visits to the galleries of independent artists that are in Plaza del Carmen.

In the summer, in the first week of July and August, the gallery offers workshops that the whole family attends and uses its space to display children’s works. They also exhibit works by graduates of the Vicentina de la Torre art school, and develop recreational activities in Plaza del Carmen with the intention that children have fun promoting their artistic creation.

Despite elementary schools being the main audience, the Carmen Project has also reached secondary and pre-university education on several occasions, as well as the architecture faculty at the University of Camagüey to give workshops and conferences.

Since 2002, the Fidelio Ponce de León gallery has been promoting the artistic talent and memory of the city, with the comprehensive Carmen project that draws smiles and new horizons to all its participants.
