This building dates from the early nineteenth century, but in 1878, a mortgage document divided the house into two houses. This house not only saw the birth of the National Poet, it was also a Provincial Delegation of the Cuban Journalists Union.
His work
This institution stand out among the cultural institutions of Camagüey, because it investigates, promotes and disseminates the life and work of Nicolás Guillén. The center boasts numerous scientific results in the format of undergraduate and master’s thesis, as well as courses and postgraduates that contribute to the enrichment of Guillén’s life and work from the perspectives of verse and prose, both literary expressions of excellent performance by the author.
It also included the Higher Institute of Arts, which promoted doctoral studies on topics that ranged from the life and work of Nicolás Guillén to the most varied topics related to Latin American and Caribbean literature and culture.
Nowadays, artists and creators are mobilized with a deep sense of identity with their countryman, now also the headquarters of the Foundation, Nicolás Guillén, which has found shelter in this space.
Main function
Community work is essential. The children and adolescents of the environment develop activity groups and literary workshops led by the specialists of the house museum.
With almost three decades of sustained research and dissemination work by its specialists, in the heritage area of the Historic Center of the city, this institution consolidates its educational and community work, in conjunction with other cultural institutions in the province and the country. The cultural thought of the institution overflows the life and work of the poet, while it evolves with the new cultural challenges.
Legacy
This institution keeps alive the scope of the work of the National Poet. In this sense, scientific results are published around his thinking ahead of him, pioneer, Caribbean, universal. The provincial and national competitions of all ages not only promote Guillén’s work, from children to elderlies, but also stimulate the creative spirit of those who come to the Birthplace.
The Nicolás Guillén Study Center located in his Birthplace stands out in the safeguarding of the historical, cultural, literary heritage of the town and the nation. It also becomes a fundamental component in distinguishing the city of Camagüey, as an aspiring UNESCO literary city.
