El Lugareño publishing house, created by the Office of the Historian of the city of Camagüey in 2009, has the purpose of publishing essential texts for the study of the city, the knowledge of history and the dissemination of its values; as well as research results that value the culture and heritage of the city.
Its director, Irma Horta Mesa explains the institution’s editorial policy: “We have three fundamental collections: Essence, which deals with historical and cultural issues; Landscape and Urbanism for topics related to architecture and research on the city, fundamentally; and the Future collection, dedicated to children. This does not mean that we do not edit outside of some of these collections. We also have the possibility of making the serial publication Senderos.”
If it’s about texts
The texts published by this publishing house mark an imprint in the rescue of the historical memory of Camagüey, since they include texts from the one known as the first historian of Camagüey city, Tomás Pío Betancourt, to the connection that chess generated between two men from Camagüey and the Hero of the Republic of Cuba, Antonio Guerrero.
“There are publications produced by the publisher that are essential, such as Escenas Cotidianas, by Gaspar Betancourt Cisneros, Apuntes del Camagüey, by Jorge Juárez Cano, among others. Similarly, it seems to me that the one dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the Assembly of Guáimaro, Cuando la luz del mundo crece, is a more than necessary text in which more than 30 researchers participated. That book was delivered to each of the deputies to the National Assembly in 2019. I also consider that this latest edition of Ignacio Agramonte y el Combate de Jimaguayú is a very important text for Cubans”, explains Irma Horta.
The current economic situation has made it impossible for some texts to be printed, however, that does not mean that the effort to maintain the main mission of the publishing house has ceased, and the digital format represents an alternative way to fulfill its purpose. Such is the case that the last two editions of Senderos Magazine, 23th and 24th, were presented exclusively in digital format and can be accessed through the website of the Office of the Historian of Camagüey city.
Those who work in the El Lugareño publishing house have found strategic alliances with cultural institutions such as the Cuban Book Institute, the Provincial Directorate of Books and Literature and the Ácana publishing house; important pillars to maintain its editorial work.
This, among other factors, has made it easier for this Editorial Seal to present three of its texts in this edition of the International Book Fair: Cuando la luz del mundo crece, a text compiled by Dr. Luis Álvarez Álvarez, the third edition of Ignacio Agramonte y el combate de Jimaguayú and in digital format the 24th Edition of Senderos magazine.
