El Pozo de Gracia accompanies the residents of Carmen Square since the triumph of the Revolution, when that place became a grocery store. This installation with its characteristic name is part of the attractiveness of the place; in addition to facilitating the comfort of the people who live there.
The installation was in very poor conditions in general, we did not even have a sanitary bathroom and why talk about the roof and the carpentry, Ariel García Almanza, the grocery store clerk, told us; but thanks to the repair carried out by the Office of the Historian, we now live in another reality and we can even proudly show our facility to foreigners and Camagüey residents.
For Rosa María Caballero, a local resident, the intervention of the grocery store was a blessing; because she and her family have shopped at the facility for about 60 years and when they transferred her to another grocery store she missed it, she says without a doubt.
The Office of the Historian of Camagüey city (OHCC, by its acronym in Spanish) intervened in El Pozo de Gracia grocery store due to the poor state it was in; to know details of the work carried out, Engineer Manuel González Gutiérrez, Director of Investments of the OHCC, explained:
“A capital restoration of all the carpentry was carried out, starting with the counter and the furniture, the roof was waterproofed. A new bathroom and hydro-sanitary facilities were built; in addition to electrical and lighting. The interior and exterior work was enhanced with putty and the entire ceiling, walls and furniture were painted.
“The Office assumed the project to help improve the environment and cooperate with the Directorate of Commerce by restoring the grocery store located in the Historic Center of our city, declared Cultural Heritage of Humanity.”
The work estimated at 435,000 CUP, more than in figures, translates into the idea of providing the population with a comfortable place and with an image according to its surroundings; where heritage, culture and civic responsibility shake hands.
