Since 1999 the Office of the Historian of Camagüey city began to work on a project called Agramonte’s route, which had to do with the main spaces related to El Mayor in the territory: his Birthplace, the Simoni country house, the Agramonte Park, the Revolution square and the fields of Jimaguayú, the site where he fell in combat.

In this context, a few years later, a National Competition promoted by the Office of the Historian in coordination with the Advisory Council, Codema, was launched for the development of Monumental Sculpture, which aimed to specify a proposal of high aesthetic value, historical and landscape in Jimaguayú. Well, until then the site, which had been declared a National Monument since 1978, only had an obelisk that commemorated the event; Obelisk placed at the request of veterans of the War of Independence in 1912.

The jury of the contest was chaired by the director of the Historian’s Office, José Rodríguez Barreras, and made up of important professionals from the territory, such as the renowned researcher and National History Award winner, Elda Centro Gómez.

The winning project was headed by the architect Octavio González Morgado. The execution of the work was not only of great benefit to the historic site, but also had an impact on the surrounding community.

As part of the intervention, the access road to the site was reconstructed through inverted traction and 4 factory works were built. With the intervention and the sculptural ensemble in question, the physiognomy of the place was respected, which constituted the main basis of the contest.

The work was carried out by Companies of the Ministry of Construction and the Provincial Company of Restoration and Conservation of Monuments of the Office of Historian.

Sometime later a national consultation of experts was convened in order to clarify the events surrounding the death of Agramonte, due to the great diversity of hypotheses that are being handled and the scientific lack of knowledge about the fact; prestigious personalities of the country participated in the consultation.

As a result of it, the book “Ignacio Agramonte and the combat of Jimaguayú” was published, a text that will see the launch of its third edition in 2021. More recently, and taking the research carried out as a reference, the model that recreates the combat and an audiovisual that recounts the events, they can be seen in a building built in order to offer visitors the necessary information to understand what happened that May 11th, 1873; day in which the history of Cuba lost one of his best children, to gain the legend of a hero who lives on the heart of his people.
