This May 8th, the day of Cuban Son, the Office of the Historian of Camagüey city (OHCC, by its acronym in Spanish) organized a tribute ceremony to Nené Álvarez in the place where her remains rest in the General Cemetery of this city.
In the activity, broadcast live through the OHCC Facebook page and carried out in accordance with the hygienic-sanitary measures due to COVID-19, bronze motifs were unveiled on Nené’s grave, among them, one stands out because of being one of the most repeated phrases of the renowned sonero: “Without music life would be a mistake”.
A representation of Soneros de Camacho interpreted the theme “Sabor de engaño”, a song popularized by Nené and the participants laid wreaths in his honor. According to the director of the OHCC, José Rodríguez Barreras, who gave a speech at the ceremony, nothing that has to do with culture and heritage escapes the interest of this institution, therefore the well-deserved tribute to one of the main exponents of the Sin in the city of the waterpots.
In addition, the restoration work on his tomb is part of the work carried out in the General Cemetery by the Office, in order to restore the importance this place deserves and turn it into a place of worship for cultural personalities and the history of Camagüey.
