A Music Band in a Municipality is an indisputable jewel of culture due to, among other things, its versatility. This can be said of the one here in Camagüey, who with her 104 septembers is already one of those who has true treasures to tell. And I also affirm this because it is a group that gives performances of a high artistic level, as well as other much lighter ones, thanks to its versatility.
Executions in funeral honors, religious commemorations, retreats, political events and other types of activities are assumed by this institution; which I believe is one of the oldest in the different territories of the country, since its creation dates back many years.
A little history
In its beginnings it had a municipal character and without being exempt from vicissitudes and difficulties, it never stopped providing its art. The lack of premises overwhelmed them for decades and they had to appeal to more than one alternative so that the public could continue enjoying them, and yet they remained firm.
Dissimilar musicians have passed through its stands, many of them dazzling figures who arrived and continue to be excellent musicians, and whose worth has been recognized even internationally.
We could say the same about its directors, because over the years it has had virtuosos, starting with its founder, maestro José Álvarez Varona, to the current one, Gerardo Vasconcelos Sánchez. This young musician knew how to continue the legacy of his predecessors and give it his imprint and freshness, along with numerous young people who graduated from Camagüey’s artistic education. This group has shown signs of its good work and the preparation of music professionals in our territory.
Resuming motivations
Taking advantage of this new birthday and other motivations, the beautiful tradition of the Concert Bands meeting was recently resumed, which for five years was not carried out. The Casino Campestre was filled with joy by hosting so much history, so many values; Well, there was not only the honored Provincial Band, but also with the participation of those from Florida, Guáimaro, Nuevitas and Santa Cruz del Sur. The latter is the oldest in the province with its 115 years of existence.
A new anniversary
Dazzling joy emanated from such a celebration, and now in this month itself, we Camagüeyans will continue to honor it as our beloved and always respected group. The Band, from its headquarters on the well-known Apodaca Street in our city, lets passersby listen to its notes daily, letting us know that its preparation and rehearsals are maintained. They continue to provide their art not only in any event required of them, but also in their beloved Agramonte Park, the usual house where we frequently go to enjoy their performances.
