Two glances discovered a black bird on the Christ that crowns the Cathedral of the city, the contrast of the scene suggested a title… “Angels and demons”. This is how it was in the snapshot of the photographer José A. Cortiñas Firman, who captured the moment with his lens and today is part of the photographic exhibition Revelations.

The event, with lights and details of Camagüey, was inaugurated in the evening of this November 12th, the day on which we celebrate 203 years since the town of Santa María del Puerto del Príncipe was granted, by the Spanish authorities, the title of city.

The initiative was created by the Office of the Historian, which every year, as part of the “Photographic November” event, opens the doors of the Fidelio Ponce gallery to the public with a different exhibition. In this edition it is composed of 12 photographs, both professionals and young amateurs, who, motivated by the beauty of this city full of mysteries and legends, answered the call.

Exhibition tour

Although all the works stand out for their beauty and quality of detail, three works captivated me: Últimas Luces, by Diana Ros Iraola, Las gargolas del cielo, by Leonardo Ronquillo Hung and Muchedumbre, by the young Yanet Rodríguez Álvarez .

Leonardo’s Gargoyles

By talking with the author, I was able to appreciate his love and pride for his native land, especially for the history that each building treasures, but the Church of the Sacred Heart has a special appeal.

Hence, he dedicated a whole day to portraying each of the decorative components of its facade. Lying on the floor, this work came to live, which revealed the composition of his ingenious photo.

A young woman behind the lens

Yanet Rodríguez Álvarez, from black and white, shows us the Camagüey railway station, from a perspective in which the train shown could belong to the last century or even, from the use of color, it could well be the first that circulated on the Nuevitas-Camagüey railway line.

For her, although the railway station looks deserted, she thinks about the crowds that pass through that place every day and does not let influence by the history that brought so much progress to the railway in Camagüey.

The exhibition

From the words in its catalog, written by Mailet Padilla Paneca, the collective exhibition Revelations invites you to discover the spiritual gaps that each author shares with this “infinite city”.

All that is left is to invite you to enjoy so much beauty from the details we do not pay attention in our rush life, details that come to us today from new visual perspectives.
