In a city like Camagüey, whose Historic Center is a National Monument, and a fragment of it, Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the communication of heritage has an essential role. In this context, television stands as one of the great allies of this work.
Both in Cuba and in the province, many have been the spaces in the programming that have had the objective of disseminating the patrimonial values of the cities. The most famous of these programs in our country was Andar la Habana, led by the unforgettable historian of Havana city, Eusebio Leal.
In Camagüey, the local telecentre has also reserved slots in its programming to address these issues. Informative or cultural magazines such as Acontecer and Enfoques dedicate minutes of their broadcast to the dissemination of issues related to the care and preservation of heritage, and civility. They have also approached on several occasions the life and work of people linked to these tasks.
In the same way, historical themes have been recurrent. Spaces like Memorias and Hoy en la Historia, dedicated daily to the most important events, are signs of the desire to preserve historical memory and promote patriotic traditions.
As a result of an international collaboration project with the Swiss Agency for Development, Cosude, the City Historian’s Office materialized the Audiovisuales Príncipe project, which produces specialized materials on historical issues and the dissemination of heritage, which are broadcasted by the local TV Station and on National TV.
iTS productions have also enriched museum assemblies such as the Railway Museum and the Cemetery Interpretation Center; in addition to being inserted in various platforms to facilitate access to this information through the network of networks.
Television constitutes one of the traditional means of mass communication with the largest audience, which is why it plays a fundamental role in the work of educating, disseminating and raising citizen awareness, regarding the care and protection of our heritage.
