Camagüey city became scenes of the struggle against the brutal tyranny of Fulgencio Batista, as is the case of March 2nd, 1958.

A revolutionary command lead by one of the leaders of the MR 26-7, Noel Fernández, together with other young people, entered the Camagüey Court located on Cisneros Street, corner of Hermanos Agüero, with the aim of burning 47 cases initiated against political prisoners of the Provincial jail.

Development of the action

They entered around 2 pm through the door located on Hermanos Agüeros Street. The revolutionaries took hostage Pedro Rodríguez González, son of a bailiff, and other employees who were in the place at the time of the events, being guarded by a member of the commando. The rest of the companions continued with the development of the action. They set fire to more than 8,000 initiated cases, as well as part of the archives of the Tribunal; but they managed to escape without being arrested.

This action, although it did not achieve the destruction of those documents, was something that shocked the citizens, demonstrated to the tyranny the fighting spirit and the progress achieved by the July 26th Movement in Camagüey; it also showed Noel as one of the most active members of the Movement in the territory.

We can say that with this action future generations will feel more committed to their country and be aware of how important it is to live in a homeland free from any exploitation.
