As per usual in every Camagüey Culture Week, the Office of the Historian of Camagüey city celebrates a tribute gala to recognize the contribution of personalities who have dedicated every second of their lives, to exalt various sectors in the province.
The night of Santa Cecilia, as this activity is known, was named after the imprint that has left in our roots the Camagüey society of the same name.
A little bit about history
The Popular Society of Santa Cecilia and the Philharmonic Society of Puerto Príncipe are registered as the two educational and recreational associations founded in the village, with a whole history of contributions to the culture of the territory.
The old halls of the Santa Cecilia Society were used for family reunions or gatherings, where music was played as a sign of the quality achieved by the new generation.
In 1902, the Santa Cecilia society experienced its moment of greatest splendor. Its president, Raúl Lamar Salomón, proposed to build the nation’s first monument to Ignacio Agramonte, unveiled on February 24th, 1912 by Amalia Simoni.
Tribute where tribute is due
In the heat of the celebrations for the Camagüey Culture Week, in this year somewhat different due to the epidemiological situation, Camagüey celebrates 507 years of history; together with the recognition of the personalities of different sectors that with their hard work enhance the city culture, on this night of Santa Cecilia.
