The coat of arms of the province of Camagüey was officially approved by the Cuban state on December 22th, 1926, along with the rest of the provinces. The authorship of this coat of arms corresponded to Ángel Hernández Navarro, teacher, civil servant and journalist, who on December 15th, 1926 had presented the corresponding proposal to the Provincial Council.

In 1976 the provincial coat of arms was no longer used, when it was considered that it had lost its relevance, since a new administrative political division divided the old province into two new ones: Ciego de Ávila and Camagüey.

Almost twenty years later, on September 13th, 1995, in Jimaguayú, the use of the 1926 provincial coat of arms was restored. It took place during the VII extraordinary session of the Provincial Assembly of People’s Power -VII term- and in the framework of the national act for the centenary of the Constitution of Jimaguayú, on September 16th, 1895.

In the solemn session, in accordance with the provisions of the call, the restitution of the official use of the coat of arms of the province of Camagüey was submitted to the Camagüey delegates for approval. And it was agreed to restore it, “for its historical and economic value and social, cultural and political interests.

Since September 1995, the official coat of arms of Camagüey began to be used by the Provincial Assembly of People’s Power. Nowadays, it can be seen at the entrances of the government headquarters, in the Revolution Square Major General Ignacio Agramonte Loynaz.
